What is John Mast Hi Low Reefer?

If you are sailing single-handed or with an inexperienced crew onboard, or just enjoy short sailing trips, this system will be a welcome change from the backbreaking balancing act on the coach roof. The system is quite straightforward. It simply consists of a boom with an inner roll mechanism.

The concept of furling the mainsail is not new. For generations the sail has been rolled around the actual boom. The method is simply re-invented so that the sail is furled inside the boom and developed in a way so that neither sail height nor speed is lost. In addition to making sailing a safer, easier and more comfortable experience, the system also helps to prolong the life of your mainsail. When the sail is furled inside the boom, this provides effective protection against both sunlight and saltwater. Furthermore the sail cloth is not subject to the same wear and tear as it is when raising, lowering, reefing or flaking the sail in the “old-fashioned” way.

At HYS rigging we can supply the system fully fitted, or ship to you for fitting yourself. The mast does not have to be removed and all components are designed to fit to your existing mast fittings. A new fully battened mainsail will be required and many UK sailmakers can supply these to suit.
